2001-Today: Rebirth

When Raphael Paris met McCray in the early 2000s, McCray had all but forgotten about his Cornbread days. Still struggling with addiction, he was hacking—acting as an unlicensed taxi driver—to make money for his family. But to Raphael Paris, a hip-hop and graffiti historian, Cornbread was a legend and the founder of a movement. Paris had been so inspired by Cornbread that he named his band after him. He took McCray to his music studio where he showed McCray the effects that his graffiti had on hip-hop. McCray learned that Cornbread had inspired modern graffiti artists as far away as Berlin. As McCray started to believe in his work’s impact, he found the strength to battle his addiction.
